Postage Due Issues

The first postage due stamps of Hungary were with black numerals and the crown in circle watermark and were issued on 1st November 1903. There were nine values from 1 to 100 filler, with the most common perforation being 11¾x12 comb. All except the 100 filler can also be found with line perforation 11½.

This is a particularly difficult set to find, a mint set catalogues at about £200 and the line perf set at £1200.

The same design was used when the watermark changed to a 3-dimensional crown in 1905-6. This time the 11¾x12 perforation changed to perf.15 with the earlier perforation being very scarce.

In 1908-14 the watermark was changed yet again to to a 2-dimensional crown, retaining perf.15.

Finally, in 1914, a new watermark of a completely different appearance was used, with a representation of St.Stephens Cross joined by wavy lines. This occurs both sideways and, less commonly, upright for 5 of the 8 values. Thus it can be seen that no less than 5 different watermarks are to found, which along with perforation changes cause the collector some entertainment in trying to sort them all out.
