This issue is perf 11½ line, and can be distinguished from the later electrotype issues by the absence of defects only found in the latter (see below)

This issue has perf. 11½ line and perf 12x11½ comb, changing to perf 12x11¾ in 1897.

The designs remained the same except that the background of vertical lines is much fainter.
There are two types of crown, which can be difficult to distinguish as the design was spread over 4 to 6 stamps.
The first is on medium white paper with a clear watermark, while the second is on thinner yellowish paper and the watermark is much less distinct.
Perforation was 12x11¾ comb, or much less commonly, 11½ line
